Rag Quilt Snips
If you’ve ever made a rag quilt before, you not what a tedious and difficult task it can be to make all those snips in the seam allowances. Talk about major hand fatigue!
What is a Rag Quilt
I made my first rag quilt over 40 years ago. Wow! That’s a long time! Just goes to show you how long they’ve been around. Actually, we don’t know when the first rag quilts were made, but likely the 18th or 19th century.
But, back to my first rag quilt – and every rag quilt I’ve made since then until about 5 years ago. In case you’re not familiar, a rag quilt is made by making squares (or any shape) of fabric and batting (called quilt sandwiches) and stitching them together in kind of a quilt-as-you-go fashion by sewing the pieces together with the seam allowances on the top of the fabric.
You then make little cuts like every 1/2″ or so along all those seam allowances. Then when you wash the quilt those snips fray and fluff and add so much coziness and texture to the quilt.

Why You Need Rag Quilt Snips
As I mentioned, when you make a rag quilt, you do so with all the seams exposed and then you intentionally make small cuts in ALL the seam allowances. If you try (and boy have I tried!) to make all those cuts with a pair of scissors it will wear you out!
It’s really hard to find a pair of scissors that will cut through that thickness of fabric well and easily. It creates a lot of hand fatigue. I mean a lot! Then there’s the whole frustration issue when your scissors don’t cooperate.
So, using a pair of Rag Quilt Snips is an absolute MUST if you’re going to make a rag quilt!
