How do I use the Learn to Quilt series?
Step 1: Start at the Beginning
For the best results, I recommend you start with Lesson #1 – Quilting Methods. In the first lesson you’ll discover the different methods used in piecing a quilt. There are basically three phases to sewing a quilt:
- piecing – sewing pieces of fabric together to make quilt blocks or designs that will create the top of the quilt.
- quilting – the sandwiching of the quilt top, the batting, and the backing fabric and then stitching by machine, hand, or longarm machine the quilt sandwich together.
- binding – the fabric that is sewn around the edge of the quilt to bind the raw edges together.
But when we talk about “quilting” in the general sense, we are talking about primarily the piecing of the quilt top. There are different methods you can use to piece a quilt. For the purpose of this Learn to Quilt series, we’ll be using the straight stitch method. You can read more about the quilting methods here.
Step 2: Print Each Lesson Guide
Go through each lesson one at a time and be sure to print out the guides or free printables that accompany most lessons. Once you have the guides printed out, I recommend you 3-hole punch the pages and keep them all together in a 3-ring binder.
You’ll also find a Notes page with each guide. Feel free to use this page to take any helpful notes.
Step 3: Watch the Videos
Most lessons also have an accompanying video. Be sure to watch each video. I recommend you have your lesson guide already printed out so you can follow along and take any notes.
Step 4: Get Support / Ask Questions
I’ve created a Facebook Group called Sewing is Fun (because it should be, right?). Please come join the Sewing is Fun Facebook Group, where you can ask questions, get support, receive encouragement, and be inspired by other aspiring sewists and/or quilters. It truly is a lifetime journey and we never stop learning!
