What’s Included in the Kit?
You may be wondering what’s included, here’s a list of what you’ll find in each kit:
- Each kit will include fabrics from the Shadow Play collection by Maywood Studio.
- Finished instructions, border, and binding fabrics are included with the final block in the last month.
- Instructions for each block.
Tips for Month 1 Blocks
When you stitch together the blocks for month 1, you’ll be making four blocks. These blocks will come together in month 9 and are the center blocks of the quilt.
You’ll be making:
- 4 corner units
- 4 vertical flying geese rows
- 4 mirrored flying geese rows
- 4 classic log cabin units
Tip 1: Read the Instructions First!
This is probably the best tip I can give you and that is to read through the entire set of instructions for month 1 before you begin to cut your fabrics.
Tip 2: Label Your Fabric
Although the fabrics in the instructions are clearly labeled as Fabric H, for example, along with a picture of the color of the fabric. I found it super helpful to actually label the fabric. So once I made all the cuts for Fabric H, I put them in a pile and placed a label of “H” on top of the fabric.
Tip 3: Use the Checkboxes
Starting on page 3 of the Month 1 instructions, you’ll notice a little square beside each step. Once you make the cuts or follow the instructions for that step, go ahead and check it off using the checkbox provided. This will help you to keep track of where you are and help you to be better organized (aka less mistakes).
Tip 4: You’ll Make 4 of Each Unit
Beginning on page 7 of Month 1, you’ll see the instructions for actually constructing each unit of the quilt block. I didn’t realize when I first started sewing the corner units for the block that I would be repeating the steps to make four of each unit.
So, just remember, you’ll be making:
- 4 corner units (starts on page 7)
- 4 vertical flying geese rows (starts on page 8)
- 4 mirrored flying geese rows (starts on page 9)
- 4 classic log cabin units (starts on page 11)
Tip 5: Go Slow!!
Some people have a tendency to “put the pedal to the metal” and sew at full speed. You’ll find if you slow your stitching down, that you’ll make less mistakes, stitch straighter seams, and make consistent 1/4″ seam allowances.
