What exactly is a Quilt Block of the Month and why would you want to join or participate? And where exactly can you find a Block of the Month program or challenge?
If you have ever wanted to learn how to quilt, you may have seen a reference to “Block of the Month” or maybe even a Quilt Along. But, why exactly would you want to participate in a Block of the Month if you are new to quilting?
I’m glad you asked!
What is a Block of the Month?
First of all, a Block of the Month is a program or challenge that you can join or participate in. Block of the Month is often called BOM.
With a typical Block of the Month program, a new quilt block pattern is released every month. And you basically learn how to make a quilt by making one block at a time.
Why Participate in a Quilt Block of the Month?
A BOM program is a great way to learn how to quilt in a no-pressure, go-at-your-own-pace way.
The BOM can be sponsored by a pattern designer, fabric shop, quilter, or sewist. Quilters come from all walks of life. And once you learn how, you’ll be hooked for life!
How to Participate in a Quilt Block of the Month
When you participate in a BOM there is typically a way for you to join. Either by simply downloading the fabric requirements document, signing up on a website, or joining a Facebook Group.
You can do a simple Google search for “block of the month” and find numerous quilt block programs to participate in.
Like I said, some BOM require you to actually sign-up and then you’ll have the information emailed to you. Others are more relaxed and you just simply join and work at your own pace.
And yet some BOM programs you can even purchase kits. The kits contain all the fabrics you need to make each quilt block.
