How to Sew Fabric Pumpkins
I first shared this Fabric Pumpkin Pattern on The Birch Cottage blog. You can find the original pattern here. But, I’ve simplified the instructions to try and make it a little more beginner friendly.
In this pattern, you’ll work with fabric, fusible fleece or interfacing, craft felt, and a glue gun. Did you ever think you would use a glue gun in a sewing project? Well, I’m gonna walk you through every single step. And I even have a YouTube video you can watch.
Video Tutorial
Like I said, you’ll find a video tutorial on the Hooked on Sewing YouTube channel. I had a request to make my videos slower, so I’ve tried to do that in this video. Just click HERE or on the below image to go to my YouTube video!

Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Pattern
- Print out the pattern piece.
- Cut out pattern along the outside of the solid line.
Step 2: Cut Fabric and Fusible Fleece
- Place fabric right side up, then place the pattern on top of your fabric and cut out six (6) pieces.
- Then place the pattern on top of your fusible fleece and cut out six (6) pieces.
Step 3: Cut Felt
- If you're using a felt leaf on your pumpkin, you'll want to cut out the felt leaf (or leaves) as well.
Step 4: Apply Fusible Fleece
- Apply the fusible fleece to the wrong side of each of the fabric pieces following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Add Decorative Stitching
- I applied decorative stitching to my pumpkin by stitch a row of decorative stitches right down the middle of each fused fabric piece. You can select any decorative stitch, a long straight stitch, hand stitch, or opt not to add decorative stitching at all. The choice is totally yours!
Step 6: Sew Pumpkin Pieces
- Take one of the pumpkin pieces and lay it face up. Take another pumpkin piece and lay it face down. Sew a 1/4" seam along one edge of the two pieces.
- Then open the two pieces up and lay one of the pumpkin pieces face down, lining up the long edges. Again, sew along the edge using a 1/4" seam allowance.
- You'll now have three pieces sewn together. Lay that set aside and pick up two more pieces. Lay one face up and the other face down on top. Align the edges and sew using a 1/4" seam.
- Now, open the two pieces (three sections sewn together for each). Lay one face up and one face down on top. Align the edges and pin or clip in place. Begin sewing the two sections together along one of the sides.
- Sew completely around the pumpkin, leaving a 1-1/2" to 2" opening on one side for turning.
- Once you have your pumpkin pieces sewn together, turn right side out through the opening.
Step 7: Stuff the Pumpkin
- Once you have your pumpkin pieces sewn together and turned right side out, it's time to stuff your pumpkin. How firmly you stuff your pumpkin is totally up to you.
- It is helpful to stuff smaller amounts of fiber-fil, instead of trying to stuff a big piece. You can also use fabric scraps, batting scraps or even interfacing scraps to stuff your pumpkin. I like the look of fiber-fil, so that’s what I use.
- Then once your pumpkin is stuffed to your liking, just hand stitch the opening closed.
Step 8: Attach Leaf & Stem
- If you are adding a leaf and/or stem to your pumpkin, you'll want to do that now. Use your glue gun and apply glue to the center of the top of the pumpkin and place your leaf on top, carefully applying gentle pressure.
- Then, attach a dollop of glue to the center of the leaf/pumpkin and attach your stem.
- Your pumpkin is now finished!!
