Q: How do I know which sewing machine needle to use?
Sewing machine needles come in different sizes for different types of fabric use. There are two important pieces of information about every sewing machine needle. The needle size and the needle type.
Needle Size
Sewing machine needles are identified using a standardized numbering system called NM (number metric). You will see needle sizes such as 90/14 or 70/10, for example.
This “Number metric” indicates the diameter of the needle blade in hundredths of a millimeter measured above the scarf or the short groove, but not at any reinforced part of the blade.
A sewing machine needle with a blade diameter of 0.80 mm therefore corresponds to NM 80 and a needle with a blade diameter of 1.30 mm to NM 130.
The 14 in 90/14 and 10 in needle size 70/10 represents the imperial number.
Needle Type
In addition to a range of different sizes of sewing machine needles, there are also different types of sewing machine needles. You can think of “type” as applicable to the fabric you’re using.
Yes, you need a certain weight or size of needle, but you also need a different type, such as ballpoint, universal, sharp, quilting, embroidery, jeans and leather (just to name a few).
SCHMETZ uses a color coded system to identify the different types of needles. The type is also identified on the package.
