How to Sew a Fabric Easter Basket

The design possibilities are limitless with this basic Easter basket pattern. Once you know how to make the fabric Easter basket, you could easily modify the pattern to include embroidery, different fabrics, fabric scraps, and so on.

This really is a beginner friendly sewing project. What makes it so easy is the fact that I am going to walk you through every single step. There’s even a video tutorial and photos to help you through the process.

Skills Required

The skills you need to have to make this Easter basket are:

How to thread your sewing machine.
How to load a bobbin (or maybe how to wind a bobbin) in your sewing machine.
How to sew a straight stitch.
How to use a seam ripper.
How to fuse interfacing.

Equipment Needed

Obviously, you’ll need a sewing machine if you’re going to make a fabric Easter basket. If you haven’t yet purchased a sewing machine, you can read about what to look for in a sewing machine and my beginner friendly sewing machine recommendations.

Supplies Needed

You’ll obviously need fabric to sew a gift bag. But, what type of fabric? I recommend that you use cotton, quilter’s cotton or a cotton blend. Why? Because cotton fabric is beginner friendly and easy to work with.

1 Easter Basket

Large Fabric Easter Basket

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Active Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

At 9"Hx14"Wx6"D these fabric Easter baskets are large enough to hold all the goodies from the Easter Bunny. Follow along on this beginner friendly tutorial to make one or many fabric Easter baskets!

Materials

1 yard cotton fabric, exterior and handle
1 yard cotton fabric, liner
matching thread
2 yards fusible fleece

Tools

sewing machine
rotary cutter
acrylic ruler
self-healing mat
scissors
fabric marking pen
seam gauge or ruler
pins or clips
steam iron and ironing board

Instructions

Cuts:

exterior fabric: cut (2) 17"Wx13"L
strap: cut (1) 17"x6"
liner fabric: cut (2) 17"Wx13"L
fusible fleece: cut (4) 17"Wx13"L
fusible fleece for strap: cut (1) 17"x6"

Instructions:

Make all your fabric cuts following the above cuts.
Follow manufacturer's instructions to fuse the fusible fleece to the wrong side of all fabric pieces.
Mark off a 3" square at the bottom corner for the exterior and liner fabric pieces.
Cut out the 3" squares.
With right sides of exterior fabric pieces together, stitch the side seams and across the bottoms using a 1/2" seam allowance. (Do not stitch the cut outs.)
Press the side seams and bottom seam open.
With right sides of liner fabric pieces together, stitch the side seams and across the bottoms using a 1/2" seam allowance. (Do not stitch the cut outs.)
Press the side seam and bottom seam open.
If you haven't already, fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the handle strap.
Fold sides in towards the center and press.
Fold in half so the edges are are lined up together and press. Top stitch 1/8" from edge of both long edges.
With the exterior basket fabric wrong side out, find the center front and center back of the exterior fabric of the basket and mark.
Center one end of the handle over the center mark on the basket, right sides together, and pin or clip in place. Line up the other end of the handle over the other center mark of the basket and pin or clip in place.
Sew across handle ends with 1/4" seam allowance.
Turn basket and handles right side out.
Place the basket into the liner with right sides together. Line up raw edges and seams. Pin or clip all the way around the top of the basket.
Stitch around the top edge of the basket using a 1/2" seam allowance, starting about one inch from one of the handles and leaving a 3" opening for turning.
Turn right side out through the opening.
Press the basket. Top stitch about 1/8" from edge, closing opening as you stitch.

Notes

Pattern uses 1/2" seam allowance.

Finished basket measures 9"Hx14"Wx6"D (excluding handle). Handle measures 16" long.

Cuts for Contrast Band at TOP of Basket

If you want to have a contrast band at the top of the Easter basket (like I did for the Pearl and Cora baskets), simply make the following cuts with your exterior fabric:

exterior top (2) 17"Wx4"H
exterior bottom (2) 17"Wx10"H

Cuts for Contrast Fabric at the BOTTOM of the Basket

If you want to have a contrast fabric at the bottom of the Easter basket, simply make the following cuts with your exterior fabric:

exterior top (2) 17"Wx7"H
exterior bottom (2) 17"Wx7"H
