The Janome Easy-to-Use Sewing Machine
I have created this tutorial specifically for using the Janome Easy-to-Use Sewing Machine. This sewing machine was design by Janome specifically for beginner sewists. You can learn more about this sewing machine here.
The Janome Easy-To-Use sewing machine comes with a buttonhole foot and a darning plate. The darning plate is necessary to sew a button with your sewing machine. You might be wondering why. Well, this sewing machine doesn’t have a way to drop (disengage) your feed dogs. So, you have to use the darning plate.
Don’t worry, it’s easy to use and I’ll show you how!

As I tell anyone who has questions about how to use their sewing machine, please refer to your sewing machine manual. It’s full of useful information from the manufacturer that will answer most questions you have about your machine.
In fact, you can turn to page 36 and follow along with this tutorial!
Supplies Needed
To sew a buttonhole with your sewing machine you will want to have:
- buttonhole foot (comes with the Easy-to-Sew sewing machine)
- thread
- fabric for testing
- interfacing (type appropriate for your project)
- scissors
- button
- seam ripper or buttonhole awl

Make a Test Buttonhole First
Before you make a buttonhole in your garment or actual project, I recommend you make a test buttonhole on a sample. The sample should duplicate the fabric, interfacing, and seams of the actual garment or project.

I highly recommend that you make a test buttonhole on a sample that duplicates the fabric, interfacing, and seams of your actual garment or project.
Materials
- fabric
- interfacing
- thread
- button
- fabric marker
Tools
- buttonhole foot
- scissors
- pins
- seam ripper or buttonhole awl
- Janome Easy-to-Sew sewing machine
Instructions
- Make a test buttonhole.
To do so, you'll duplicate the fabric, interfacing and seams of the garment or project. - Mark buttonhole length on fabric.
With your layers of test fabric (such as fabric and interfacing), lay the fabric right side up on a flat surface, Lay the button on top of the fabric where you want to stitch your buttonhole. While holding the button in place, make a mark on the fabric above and below the button. Remove the button. Insert a pin into each of these marks.
The pins will help you to better see the beginning and end of your buttonholes when you go to stitch them because the buttonhole foot will cover the marks you made on your fabric. - Attach the buttonhole foot.
To do so, remove the existing presser foot, if you haven't already. Then place the buttonhole foot under the presser foot holder. Line up the metal bar on the buttonhole foot with the bottom of the presser foot holder. Push up until it snaps into place. - Place fabric under buttonhole foot.
Line up the front buttonhole marking on your fabric with the markings on the foot. - Set pattern selector dial to 1.
Sew forward until you reach the front marking of your buttonhole. Stop sewing at a left stitch. - Set pattern selector dial to 4-2.
Sew five (5) stitches. Stop sewing at a right stitch. - Set pattern selector dial to 3.
Sew until you reach the back marking of the buttonhole. Stop sewing at a right stitch. - Set pattern selector dial to 4-2.
Sew a few bartacks and raise the needle from the fabric. Then set the pattern selector dial to a straight stitch. Sew a few locking stitches. - Remove the fabric from the machine.
Cut the sewing thread. Insert a pin inside the bartack. Then cut the opening with a seam ripper. Be careful to not cut the stitches.
